Reference Service Life: How Long the Music Plays

Reference service life (RSL) estimates how long that performance lasts in real buildings under normal maintenance. Pick an optimistic RSL and total impacts shrink like a cheap tee in the dryer. Choose one rooted in field data, accelerated testing, and climate maps, and specifiers stay confident (ISO 21930, 2024). Smart EPD now flags RSL assumptions on the front page so reviewers cannot miss them.

Linking RSL to B4 Replacements

Module B4 accounts for in-use replacements. If your façade panel claims a sixty-year RSL, a building with a ninety-year design life sees exactly one replacement. Shift the RSL to thirty years and you double replacements, transport, and end-of-life burdens. Many LCAs still forget to update B4 when tweaking RSL, leading to apple versus orange math. Auditors spot the gap fast.

Region Matters—So Do Maintenance Schedules

A cedar siding that lasts fifty years in Oregon’s mild rain can fail in fifteen on a Gulf Coast high-rise. National material databases such as NMD 2025 now publish climate-adjusted RSL bands. Match your PCR’s geographic scope or justify departures with service records and coating schedules. Otherwise, bids in humid markets may discount your claims.

Practical Moves for Manufacturers

Collect warranty return data, field inspection logs, and lab weathering results before sitting down with your LCA practitioner. Align the FU with how architects specify your product—by weight, area, or load capacity.
