A batch release worth raising a glass to
Between 27 and 31 October 2026, Jotun A/S pushed six new EPDs into EC3. That brings the Norwegian coatings group to 528 current EPDs in the database, plus 271 that have expired over the years. It is one of the deepest EPD benches in the paint and coatings world.
Six declarations might sound small next to 528. But in EPD land a batch release is a bit like a band dropping a deluxe edition of an album that already went platinum: the existing fans are happy, and the new tracks reach listeners the original didn't.
Who Jotun is and why scale matters here
Jotun was founded in Sandefjord, Norway, and today makes decorative paints, marine coatings, protective coatings and powder coatings. In 2025 the group reported operating revenue of NOK 34,333 million and record operating profit (Jotun Annual Report, 2025). The same report describes Jotun as the global market leader in marine coatings (Jotun Annual Report, 2025).
For building projects, the relevant parts of that portfolio are the Jotafloor resin floors, Jotashield and Fenomastic architectural paints, Penguard, Barrier and Hardtop protective systems, SteelMaster intumescents, and the Super Durable and Durasol powder ranges. All of these show up in Jotun's EC3 profile, which tells you how seriously the company treats product transparency across business lines.
What the new EPDs cover
The newest records in Jotun's profile follow a recognisable pattern. Nearly all reference the same PCR, Part B: Requirements for the EPD for Coatings with organic binders, and most are published through EPD Norway (EPD-Norge). A smaller group, including Jotafloor PU Topcoat and Jotafloor PU Crete, went through EPD-Global, the newer Norwegian operator. The Jotafloor PU Topcoat record names LCA.no AS as the LCA developer.
The scope is the interesting part. Jotun doesn't lump product families together. Its declarations are product and factory specific, so Hardtop AX has separate EPDs for production in Europe, Turkey and Thailand, and Jotashield Ultra Clean has its own records for Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. That granularity means a project in Dubai can reference the EPD from the UAE plant instead of a European average, which is precisely what a careful LCA practitioner wants to see.
The freshest issue dates in the profile cluster around 2026, with Jotashield Flex (PT Jotun Indonesia) issued on 14 July and Jotafloor PU Topcoat on 19 August. The product mix spans resin flooring, anticorrosive primers and topcoats, textured facade finishes and interior emulsions. This batch looks like Jotun deepening coverage in categories it already owns rather than stepping into brand new territory.

Mind the gap between verification and visibility
If some of this week's EPDs were verified in July or August, they spent roughly ten to fifteen weeks in limbo before specifiers could find them in EC3. During that window a verified EPD exists on paper, but a designer running a whole building LCA can't easily pull it into their model.
Shortening that lag is a quiet competitive advantage. The sooner a declaration hits the databases that architects and engineers actually search, the sooner it starts earning its keep on live bids. Manufacturers who want future EPDs listed faster are welcome to reach out to the author directly via LinkedIn or email.
How the batch stacks up against coatings rivals
Coatings is a crowded field for EPDs, and corporate structures make the counts messy because EC3 splits big groups across several organisation records. Still, the snapshot as of early November 2026 is telling:
- PPG spreads its declarations across several records, with 368 current EPDs under PPG Industries and 155 under PPG Coatings, mostly via EPD International.
- AkzoNobel shows 153 current EPDs on its main record, many recently published through MARK Product, plus a handful under Interpon powder coatings.
- Hempel has a single current EPD on its main record (a BRE Global declaration expiring in December 2026), while its Australian Wattyl business holds five via EPD Norway.
So this batch is not a catch-up move. Jotun was already at or near the front of the pack, and six more declarations widen its lead over Hempel and keep it firmly in the same league as PPG. Why this matters when the spec is being written
When a design team models embodied carbon and a product has no product-specific EPD, they usually have to fall back on conservative generic data, sometimes with an extra penalty factor on top. That makes the undeclared product look worse on paper than it probably is. A verified, plant-specific EPD removes that handicap entirely.
For Jotun's sales teams this means fewer conversations that come down to price alone. A Jotafloor system with its own EPD is much harder to value engineer out of a project with carbon targets than a competing floor without one. Many of those lost opportunities are invisible to manufacturers, since nobody calls to say they were swapped out at design stage.
The common PCR also helps. Because nearly all of Jotun's coatings use the same Part B rules, comparisons within the range stay apples to apples. If PCR selection for coatings feels like a maze, our explainer on PCRs for paints and coatings walks through the main options.
Making the EPDs easy to find
Jotun deserves credit for surfacing its declarations publicly. Its site has a dedicated EPD resource page for green building certifications, and product pages such as Jotafloor EP SL link straight to the relevant EPD. That is exactly what specifers need when they are building a submittal package at 6pm on a Thursday.
With 528 current declarations across dozens of plants, the one improvement worth considering is a single searchable index by product and factory. The more EPDs a company holds, the more a simple filter saves everyone time.
Keeping the momentum through renewal season
There is one housekeeping note in the data. Jotun has 45 EPDs carrying a 2026 expiry date and 55 more in 2027, so a steady renewal rhythm matters as much as new releases. A large portfolio is a garden, not a monument; it needs regular tending to stay green.
This week's six new EPDs show that rhythm is alive and well. For a company already leading its category on transparency, the batch reinforces a simple message to architects, engineers and contractors working on carbon conscious projects: if it's a Jotun product, there's a good chance verified data is already waiting.
