Searing Industries’ HSS EPDs face March 2027 cliff

Nine Searing Industries Environmental Product Declarations are slated to expire in March 2027. If renewals are not in motion, specifiers on EPD‑required projects could pivot to competitors whose hollow structural section declarations stay valid into 2029 and 2030. The commercial risk is simple to picture: when the scoreboard goes blank, the team with live stats gets picked. Here is what is expiring, what is not yet replaced, and where the market is likely to look next.

What expires and when

Searing Industries has nine current product‑specific EPDs set to expire on March 22, 2027. They cover fabricated and unfabricated hollow structural sections used across structural steel framing under CSI MasterFormat 05 12 00. Scope spans HSS, structural pipe and pipe piling, plus mechanical rounds and specialty shapes produced in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and Cheyenne, WY under UL as program operator and the “Part B: Designated Steel Construction Products” PCR.

Replacement status today

As of July 20, 2026, we do not see newer Searing Industries EPDs that would extend validity past March 2027 for these same product families. That means the current set continues to serve specs for now, but a gap opens in March unless renewals are filed and published in time.

The nine records, by product scope

The expiring group consolidates into two scopes that show up as multiple records in EPD directories:

  • Fabricated HSS declarations covering round, square, and rectangular sections for construction and industrial uses.
  • Unfabricated HSS declarations that capture steel tube and pipe products prior to downstream fabrication.

Both scopes reference the UL operator and the designated steel construction products PCR, with consistent March 22, 2027 validity end dates.

Where specifiers may pivot if renewals lag

If fresh Searing EPDs are not live by March, project teams that require product‑specific declarations are likely to reach for peers with longer runways. Representative options include:

  • Atlas Tube fabricated and unfabricated HSS at multiple plants, UL‑hosted, with current expiries running into 2029 and 2030.
  • Bull Moose Tube unfabricated low‑embodied‑carbon steel pipe and tube, SCS‑hosted, valid through late 2029.
  • Nucor Tubular Products ERW and DOM tubing, valid into 2030 for structural applications.

These are product‑specific declarations in the same category, so they satisfy common owner and AEC submittal criteria when a named product EPD is required. We cover the broader HSS field here for quick benchmarking in our category snapshot, which many teams bookmark for bids (EPDs for Hollow Sections in the United States, 2026).

Why a lapse matters for sales enablement

On projects tracking embodied‑carbon targets, a product without a current product‑specific EPD often carries a conservative accounting penalty that makes alternatives with active declarations more attractive. That dynamic narrows negotiating room, slows submittals, and can quietly knock a product out of a short‑list even when pricing is sharp. It is not about winning on marketing gloss. It is about removing friction so buyers can pick with confidence.

PCR and operator considerations for renewal

The expiring Searing set cites the UL operator and the steel construction products PCR. When renewing, teams should confirm the latest PCR edition and data vintage expectations so the update aligns with current practice. A strong plan locks in the reference year for utilities and scrap inputs, confirms supply mix assumptions, and checks whether plant‑specific splits are warranted for major facilities. The rulebook analogy applies here. A PCR is the rules of Monopoly. Ignore it and the game falls apart.

Timing guidance many teams follow

Renewal work typically spans months from kickoff to publication. Factory data pulls, supplier confirmations, and verification queues are the long poles. Starting now keeps the March 2027 date from turning into a fire drill and avoids that awkward period where a spec wants a PDF and all teh links point to expired copies.

Where to find Searing’s current PDFs

Searing hosts its Fabricated HSS declaration on its site for download, helpful for submittal packets and internal training (Searing Industries EPD, 2022). Industry‑average context for fabricated HSS is available from AISC and the Steel Tube Institute, useful for education and background reading rather than product selection (AISC and STI fabricated HSS EPD, 2025).

What to watch through Q1 2027

Keep an eye on fresh Searing listings and on competitor updates that stretch validity into the 2030 window. If replacements land before March 22, 2027, specifiers retain a clean path to use the same products. If not, expect Atlas Tube, Bull Moose Tube, and Nucor Tubular Products to earn more mentions in addenda and VE discussions until new Searing PDFs go live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Searing Industries product families have EPDs expiring in March 2027?

Fabricated hollow structural sections and unfabricated hollow structural sections, including structural pipe and pipe piling, with UL as program operator under the steel construction products PCR. All nine current records share a March 22, 2027 validity end date.

Are replacement EPDs for Searing’s HSS already published?

As of July 20, 2026, we do not find newer Searing declarations that extend beyond March 22, 2027. Monitoring is recommended in case new PDFs post ahead of that date.

What competitor EPDs are current if a lapse occurs?

Examples include Atlas Tube HSS EPDs valid into 2029–2030, Bull Moose Tube’s unfabricated low‑embodied‑carbon steel pipe and tube valid to late 2029, and Nucor Tubular Products ERW and DOM tubing valid into 2030.

Will specifiers lose access to Searing’s EPD data after March 22, 2027 if renewals are not posted?

Yes for product‑specific data in active submittals. Industry‑average resources remain available, but projects that require a product‑specific EPD would likely choose alternatives with live declarations.

Does a PCR expiring invalidate an EPD?

No. PCRs have their own lifecycles. An EPD remains valid until its stated end date. On renewal, the new EPD must use the then‑current applicable PCR version.
