Scanox AS EPDs due in January 2027

Two Scanox declarations are reaching the end of their validity in early 2027. If fresh documents are not published in time, specifiers working on projects that require current EPDs will pivot to comparable paints that are already covered. Here’s exactly which SKUs are affected, what we did and didn’t find for replacements, and which competitor products are most likely to fill the gap if the clock runs out.

What’s expiring, exactly

Scanox has two declarations set to lapse in Q1 2027. BUTINOX Premium Matt is valid until January 6, 2027 (EPD Norway, 2022) (EPD Norway, 2022). BUTINOX Futura 16 is valid until March 2, 2027 (EPD Global, 2022) (EPD Global, 2022). Both sit in the decorative coatings family and are commonly specified for interior walls and exterior wood, respectively.

Are replacements already live?

We looked for updated EPDs covering the same two SKUs. As of May 20, 2026, we did not find newer declarations for Premium Matt or Futura 16. Scanox does have other current paint EPDs, including BUTINOX Elegant Matt and BUTINOX Klassisk Silkematt, each listed through 2030, yet these are different products and do not replace the expiring SKUs one‑for‑one (see listings for BUTINOX Elegant Matt and BUTINOX Klassisk Silkematt).

What happens for specs if nothing lands by January

If Premium Matt’s EPD lapses on January 6, 2027 and Futura 16 follows in March, those SKUs will no longer contribute as product‑specific EPDs on projects that need current documentation. Specifiers aren’t going to wait, they pick the next best documented can. Teams can still propose alternative Scanox paints that retain coverage, but when an exact‑match EPD is required, the path of least resistance is a competitor with a live declaration.

Credible alternatives with current EPDs

Here are peer products likely to be chosen instead if renewals slip.

  • Interior matte walls: Jotun LADY Pure Color. Valid to February 8, 2029 (EPD Norway, 2024) (EPD Norway, 2024).
  • Interior acrylic matte: StoColor Opticryl Matt. Valid to March 24, 2030 (EPD Norway, 2025).
  • Exterior wood coating: Teknos NORDICA EKO 3894‑24. Valid to February 21, 2027, which still covers early‑2027 tenders (EPD Norway, 2022).

If the brief allows broader exterior wall coatings, Jotun’s facade lines also have multiple EPDs running into 2029–2030 (EPD Norway, 2024–2025).

Why timing matters commercially

Five‑year validity is the industry’s default, so expiries cluster. That creates pinch points where a single missed month can knock a hero SKU out of shortlists during active bids. On LEED v5 projects, a product‑specific EPD continues to unlock credit contributions. Once a declaration crosses its end date, the same product starts carrying a penalty in carbon accounting and in time‑pressed procurement conversations.

Renewal checklist for the next eight months

Treat Q3 as the last safe window for data finalization. Confirm the target PCR, align geographic markets, and lock reference year datasets. Keep packaging, tint bases, and any biocide changes in scope so a late spec tweak doesn’t trigger rework. Aim to submit while plant teams are available, not in peak maintenance season. It sounds basic, but a crisp internal RACI prevents the dreaded version‑pinball right before verifier review.

Where to monitor status

Public listings for the expiring SKUs are on EPD‑Norge and EPD‑Global. Scanox also shares sustainability updates and broader environmental initiatives on its site, which is worth bookmarking for release notes and policy shifts: Scanox sustainability page. Product info for Futura 16 is here for quick context: butinoxfutura.no.

Bottom line for specifiers and manufacturers

The window is still open. If renewal drafts start now, there is ample time to publish before January 2027 and preserve spec continuity for Premium Matt, then ride through March for Futura 16. If drafts slip, be ready with pre‑vetted alternates so bids stay responsive. It’s boring advice, but it wins specs. And it’s the surest way to avoid that last‑mile, last‑week fire‑drill that nobody wants, or needs, or even recommmended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which exact Scanox EPDs are reaching end of validity in Q1 2027?

BUTINOX Premium Matt is valid to January 6, 2027 and BUTINOX Futura 16 to March 2, 2027. Dates per official listings (EPD Norway, 2022) and (EPD Global, 2022).

Are there already replacement EPDs for these same SKUs?

As of May 20, 2026, no public replacements were found for Premium Matt or Futura 16. Scanox has other current EPDs in paint, but these are different products and do not substitute one‑for‑one.

What competitor products have current EPDs and similar use?

Interior matte: Jotun LADY Pure Color, valid to Feb 8, 2029 (EPD Norway, 2024). Interior acrylic: StoColor Opticryl Matt, valid to Mar 24, 2030 (EPD Norway, 2025). Exterior wood: Teknos NORDICA EKO 3894‑24, valid to Feb 21, 2027 (EPD Norway, 2022).

Will specifiers lose EPD coverage on these SKUs after expiry?

Yes, once the date passes, the EPD no longer counts as current. Projects that require valid, product‑specific EPDs will typically choose covered alternatives unless a new declaration is published in time.
