EPD Expiry Watch

3M’s December 2026 EPD watch: one to renew

Heads‑up for roofing specs: one 3M declaration in asphalt shingles is scheduled to expire in December 2026. If it lapses without a successor, project teams that require current EPDs may pivot to competitors that already have valid declarations, which can shift bid math and brand visibility fast. Eight months is enough time to renew if data collection starts now.

What is expiring in December 2026

The EPD in question covers Ecoasis NEX (asphalt shingles), published with UL Solutions under the PCR for asphalt shingles and modified bituminous roofing. Its validity runs through December 2026, which puts it inside the standard renewal window right now (UL, 2022) (Ecoasis NEX EPD PDF).

Are replacements already live

As of April 20, 2026, we did not find a newer UL‑published EPD for the same 3M‑listed product line on UL or on 3M’s product sustainability pages. If one is in progress but not yet public, specifiers still only see the current document’s December 2026 end date (UL, 2022). 3M does maintain EPDs in other categories, for example window films in the Prestige series that list valid‑through dates in October 2026 (EPD International, 2026) (S‑P‑00994) and highlights EPD use on its architectural sustainability page (3M, 2026).

Where specs could shift if no renewal appears

When a product‑specific EPD expires, many owners and LEED v5‑driven projects default to conservative factors. That raises the friction to keep a product on the short list. In asphalt shingles, we already see current competitor declarations that specifiers can pick up today:

  • Atlas Roofing Pinnacle Pristine and StormMaster Shake families have fresh EPDs verified by Smart EPD with validity reaching into 2031 (Smart EPD, 2026).
  • CertainTeed holds current Smart EPD declarations in modified bitumen systems valid to 2030, which sometimes serve as alternates on roof scopes that can accomodate membranes instead of shingles (Smart EPD, 2026).

If a renewed shingle EPD does not arrive in time, those listings are the likeliest beneficiaries.

What expiring means for sales and bid velocity

An EPD close to expiry increases RFI traffic and slows approvals. Teams have to answer whether the declaration will still be valid at submittal and at install. Lose the EPD and pricing has to work harder because carbon accounting uses penalizing defaults. That is avoidable with a simple renewal cadence anchored to data readiness.

Renewal timing and what to prepare

We generally advise starting the refresh six months before the end date so verification and publication do not collide with bid due dates. The heavy lift is data: one recent production year of utilities, materials, transport, yields, scrap, and packaging, plus site details and QC records. If the underlying PCR version has advanced, align the model accordingly and confirm operator formatting early so typesetting does not become the bottleneck.

Bottom line for specifiers and manufacturers

There is a single 3M‑listed asphalt shingle EPD approaching its December 2026 end date. No public replacement appears yet. Competitors already hold current declarations that extend into 2030 and 2031, which makes them easy to slot on projects that require active EPDs (Smart EPD, 2026). Renewing on time keeps submittals smooth and prevents unnecessary swapps at the last minute.
