Hard numbers you can actually verify
The International EPD System sets public registration fees: EUR 1,000 for the first EPD, sliding to EUR 50 by the hundredth (International EPD System, 2024). Third-party verification for a mid-complexity building product averages EUR 3,000–7,000 across EU markets (NMD, 2025).
Hidden labour and opportunity costs
Every hour a process engineer hunts for diesel-consumption receipts is an hour not spent tuning the line. If that engineer bills internally at USD 95/hour, fifty hours of spreadsheet duty equals nearly USD 5,000—a silent surcharge that rarely shows up on purchase orders.
Grants and rebates: helpful but in flux
EPA’s C-MORE program awarded USD 160 million in 2024 to co-fund robust EPDs for construction materials (EPA, 2025). Those funds survive the recent IRA rollbacks, but application windows are tight and oversubscribed. Plan early or budget as if the grant will not land.
ROI still dwarfs the spend

The price question, reframed
Asking “What will an EPD cost?” is half the story. The smarter ask is, “What will credible, third-party-verified data unlock for our sales funnel?” When the answer is larger bid lists, faster specs, and less frantic data wrangling, the line-item fee starts to look downright small.
